There comes a time in your life when you are not supervised anymore. You don’t have to check in or get approval or let anyone know much of anything on a daily basis. This can be a tough transition for those who have never been unsupervised.
I’m not just talking about work, but home life, recreation time, etc. Actually having no oversight sounds great, but it can be really tough.
It usually come after having proven you make good decisions and can be expected to continue to do so, even with no one watching. This gets a lot of people into trouble, from CEOs to janitors and everyone in between has been caught doing things they shouldn’t be on company time.
I see this in the future for my kids as well. If I never give them any leeway to create and be on their own, at the first chance, I envision them not knowing what to do with their newfound freedom.
Having no oversight is scary because it’s you vs. you. It’s no longer you vs. a boss or parent or law. It’s all about your character. Do you have what it takes to oversee yourself?
